Assessment

Injury Related Psychological Assessment
Victims of work related injuries and motor vehicle accidents are often faced with dramatic changes in their lives. They may experience anxiety, depression, or fear of driving, along with difficulty sleeping and adjustment to pain. According to the Statutory Accident Benefits Regulation, these individuals are entitled to treatment for these symptoms. To determine treatment eligibility, an assessment must first be completed.
The Injury Related Psychological Assessment focuses on determining what impact the accident had on the individual’s emotional and social functioning. In addition, we provide a comprehensive assessment report which consists of accident details, review of the individual’s social/emotional functioning prior to the accident, and treatment recommendations.

Neuropsychological Assessment
A neuropsychological assessment is done to determine if organic changes to the brain were made due to injury. This usually takes place when accident involves the victim hitting his/her head and post concussive symptoms are present, such as headache, nausea and dizziness. These clients may experience cognitive changes after accident, such as memory loss or difficulty processing new information. During the assessment, we use a standardized test (norm test) to determine how different parts of the brain work and what kind of changes occurred after accident. The test consists of a comprehensive assessment of memory, attention, visual motor and verbal reasoning abilities, and other functioning. If we determine brain injury, a cognitive rehabilitation plan is then established and can be provided through our Brain Injury Program.

Catastrophic Impairment Assessment

In very severe cases where certain physical and/or psychological impairments were caused as a result of the accident, the client can be determined as catastrophic. In these cases, the client usually cannot work and requires intensive rehabilitation and treatment, which entitles them up to one million dollars in benefits for treatment. From a psychological and cognitive perspective, a client is deemed catastrophic if he/she has marked or severe impairments in mental health.

Psychovocational Assessment

In cases when the client cannot return to work, a psychovocational assessment is conducted to determine what transferable skills and other occupations the client can be employed in based on their previous training and work experience. The assessment also examines the client’s cognitive abilities, psychological function and general personality or interests.
